Academic Recognition of Maharishi University of Management

Issue: Have Maharishi University of Management and its faculty and scientists been recognized by the larger academic and scientific community?

The Evidence:

Over the 30 years of the university's history, the faculty of Maharishi University of Management have published hundreds of articles in peer-reviewed journals, participated in innumerable professional conferences, and won many academic awards.   For example, to date, more than $32 million have been awarded to Maharishi University of Management in Federal and other grants for scientific research and academic development, including more than $20 million from the National Institutes of Health for research in natural medicine. Dr. John Hagelin, chairman of the Physics Department, is a world authority in the area of unified quantum field theories. His articles on electroweak unification, grand unification, supersymmetry and cosmology include some of the most cited references in the physical sciences. Dr. Hagelin has conducted pioneering research at CERN (the European Center for Particle Physics) and SLAC (the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center), and is responsible for the development of a highly successful grand unified field theory based on the superstring.

In recognition of his outstanding achievements, Dr. Hagelin was named winner of the prestigious Kilby Award, which recognizes scientists who have made “major contributions to society through their applied research in the fields of science and technology.” The award recognized Dr. Hagelin as “a scientist in the tradition of Einstein, Jeans, Bohr and Eddington.”

As another example, Dr. Charles N.  Alexander has been honored by special editions of three different journals, Journal of Adult Development (2000, volume 7, No. 4); Journal of Offender Rehabilitation, (2003, volume 36, Nos. 1/2/3/4). Transcendental Meditation in Criminal Rehabilitation, and Crime Prevention; Journal of Social Behavior and Personality, (2005, volume 17, No. 1). Maharishi School students consistently win competitions in mathematics, such as MathCounts and Math Bee, and have represented the state of Iowa at the National MathCounts Competition.

The Maharishi school has won more "Critics Choice" awards in the Theater Arts than any other school in the history of Iowa. The school has also won 41 state championships in Odyssey of the Mind and more Designation ImagiNation competitions than any other school in the state.
