Issue: Has the research on the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhis been published in peer-Reviewed journals?

The Evidence:

Yes. Research on the Transcendental Meditation and Transcendental Meditation-Sidhi programs has been published in 160 peer-reviewed scientific journals and edited books, including some of the leading journals in many fields.

Download a PDF of the Annotated Bibliography of Scientific Research on Maharishi’s Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi Programs: Collected Papers, Volumes 1-6. (800 KB file size)

The Annotated Bibliography lists the first 524 studies and research reviews (4,558 pages) on the TM technique and summarizes the findings of each study.

You can search the Annotated Bibliography by topic (for example, EEG coherence, depression, or self-actualization) to find all the studies that have been done on each topic. Or you can search by author, or journal to locate all the studies by a particular author or in a particular journal.

You can also peruse the various sections of the Annotated Bibliography to find out what has been done under broad categories of research. For example, the sections of volume 6, which are typical, are:

Part I: Physiology

A: Metabolic, Biochemical, and Cardiovascular Changes

    B: Electrophysiological and Electroencephalographic Changes

    C: Health

Part II: Psychological

A: Intelligence, Learning, and Academic Performance

    B: Development of Personality

Part III: Sociological

    A: Rehabilitation

B: Productivity and Quality of Life

Part IV: Theoretical and Review Papers

    A: Physiology and Health

    B: Education

    C: Psychology

    D: Rehabilitation

    E: Productivity

    F: Quality of Life

The broad range of positive changes in every area of life, from the biochemical level to collective consciousness, indicate the Transcendental Meditation program functions on the integrative, unified level of natural law.

Journals. Leading journals where TM research has been published include, but are not limited to, Science (an official journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science), Scientific American, American Journal of Physiology (the official journal of the American Physiological Society), Electroencephalography and Clinical Neurophysiology (now called Clinical Neurophysiology, the official organ of the International Federation of Clinical Neurophysiology, Italian Clinical Neurophysiology Society, and the Japanese Society of Clinical Neurophysiology), Hypertension (an official journal of the American Heart Association), American Psychologist and the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology (both official journals of the American Psychological Association), Intelligence (a multidisciplinary journal, widely considered the best in the field), and the Journal of Conflict Resolution (widely considered the best journal in the field).

These journals are completely independent of the TM organization.

“Over the past 10 years the editors and reviewers of the International Journal of Neuroscience have accepted several papers on Transcendental Meditation because they have met the rigorous standards of scientific publication. IJN is honored to have two Nobel laureates on its editorial board, and has a distinguished group of scientists from leading universities on every continent who judge the scientific value of the papers submitted for consideration.”

—Dr. Sidney Weinstein, Editor-in-Chief, International Journal of Neuroscience
